Should You Switch Health Insurance

Should You Switch Health Insurance

Determine Where You Are Moving: If you are moving within your state and staying at the same job, you can probably keep your health insurance. If you are moving out of state, chances are you will have to find a new health insurance plan. You may be able to keep your carrier, but the details of your plan may be altered.

Consider How Much Health Insurance You Need: Cost is a major factor when determining what health insurance policy is right for you. Evaluate your ongoing health problems, how frequently you visit the doctor, and future surgeries you may need. If the policy is very cheap, make sure you look at how much your deductible will be! You may end up paying for all your visits to the doctor out of pocket if you have a high deductible.

Research Carriers In Your New State: Not every state has the same health insurance options; companies and policies vary by state. Start your search by identifying what companies offer health insurance in your new state. From there, research your needs, policies, and prices. Remember, if you are switching jobs, they may provide health insurance!

Keep In Mind Enrollment Periods: Depending on your state, there may be restrictions on when you can enroll in your new plan. There are exceptions for qualifying life events, such as moving, that may enable you to pick a new health insurance plan outside of open enrollment.  Make sure you are aware of when you can enroll so you do not get left without health insurance!
